WEDDING TRADITIONS

In the olden days, marriages were arranged with the consult of a fortune teller. On the wedding day, both the bride and the groom's houses were decorated in red. The groom's family would send out a procession of servants, musicians and a carriage to the bride's family to collect her. The bride would then be brought back to the groom's house and the two would perform the marriage ceremony witnessed by friends and relatives. The bride and groom would worship the heavens and the earth as well as their ancestors, serving tea to the parents and grandparents. The groom's family would then throw a huge feast to celebrate the wedding.

In modern Chinese society, the wedding feast is still considered to be very important. A traditional Chinese banquet will include somewhere around 12 courses with roast pig, abalone, shark fin soup, fried rice and noodles, dessert and fresh fruit. Guests are seated at round tables, served “family style” and the feast may last many hours. The bride may change dresses up to four or five times during the event in order to showcase various styles. Before and after the wedding banquet guests often partake in mahjong, a traditional Chinese game of tiles.

Weddings are often held in the ballrooms of Hong Kong’s beautiful hotels. Auspicious dates, such as the 8th of the month, are popular for Chinese weddings as they are said to ensure a lucky and prosperous marriage. On such dates hotels may cater to multiple weddings at once. The color red is also a frequent theme in Chinese weddings, thought to bring good luck.
