Discover Asia’s rich and intricate culture through its many colorful festivals
Summer in Asia is a time of entertaining festivals, many dating back centuries and some taking place for weeks. Most festivals are open to people of all ages and welcome guests, providing travelers a great opportunity to mix with local residents.

China
Mid-Autumn Festival
(Sep 23) - Also known as the Moon Festival, this traditional harvest festival dates back 3,000 years. Many families and friends celebrate this moment gathering under the harvest moon and eating delicious mooncakes and fruits.

Hong Kong
Hong Kong Dragon Boat Carnival
(July 23 - 25) - Hong’s famous Victoria Harbour comes to life every summer with hundreds of traditional long boats, carved from teak wood and beautifully decorated to resemble a dragon. Racing these colorful works of art has been taking place for over 200 years but in 1976 Hong Kong made it into a popular sport. Competing teams of 20 to 50 paddlers synchronize their strokes to the beat of a drummer while crowds shout their encouragements from the shoreline. The festival also features an outdoor carnival with amazing food, drink and live entertainment celebrated along the Tsim Sha Tsui Waterfront Promenade.

Japan
Gion Matsuri The Gion Festival
(July) - It spans entire month of July. The Yoiyama evenings from the 14th to the 16th is a precious opportunity to visit traditional Japanese residences which exhibit valuable family heirlooms. The festival’s high point is on the 17th when the traditional Yamaboko Junkou float parade takes place.

Korea
Boryeong Mud Festival
(July 17 - 25) - Daecheon Beach on Korea’s west coast holds an annual mud festival offering visitors opportunities to enjoy massages as well as take home bags filled with well refined sea mud consisting of rich in minerals known for their many beautifying properties.

Macau
Macau International Fireworks Display Contest
(September 11,18,22 and 25 and October 1st) - Macau’s stunning landscape is illuminated by fireworks displays as it celebrates its rich cultural heritage. Fireworks experts come from around the world are invited to take part in this competition and create an spectacular show of multicolored lights and formations.

Philippines
Peñafrancias
(September 10) - This annual celebration, now on its 300th year, honors Our Lady of Peñafrancia and is one of the biggest and most popular religious events in the Philippines. A spectacular line up of religious and cultural activities await the thousands of devotees expected to pilgrimage to Naga City for the event.

Singapore
Singapore Food Festival
(July) - Singapore sizzles with local and international cuisine during this month-long festival. Between July 16-24, the festival features a taste of Singapore’s ethnic dishes with more than 30 famous restaurants and stalls.

Thailand
Day of Celebration for Her Majesty the Queen
(Aug 12) - To celebrate Her Majesty the Queen of Thailand’s birthday, public buildings are elaborately decorated with lights and images of the Queen are prominently displayed in peoples’ homes. Thais perform alms-giving ceremonies at temples in the morning and follow with a huge festival of music and culture at Sanam Luang and Ratchadamnoen Avenue in Bangkok.
